Carmen
One of the world's most exciting operas, Bizet's
"Carmen" was considered vulgar and brutal at its premiere.
An exotic gypsy girl, Carmen is desired by many, but chooses
to seduce the proud soldier Don José. He abandons his career to join her band
of smugglers. Carmen soon grows bored of his devotion and becomes
the lover of Escamillo, a celebrity bull-fighter. Blinded by
jealousy, Don José confronts Carmen and begs her to love him
once more. She mocks his anguish and pain, his rage overflows,
and Don José murders her in cold blood.
